I read an answer on Quora about the double life. An experience a young girl had of a youth pastor in training (who, after some years, became a full-time youth pastor and publicly made it known) was caught by her on a dating website saying some despicable things. He even got unimaginably vulgar.
An excerpt: ’I was dumbstruck. The man who had taught me about the value of abstinence before marriage 8 years prior was now asking me to f*ck. I had idolized him as the epitome of a good Christian man. I thought he was perfect. My whole view of everyone in the church kind of changed after that. I had always thought everyone I met in the church was kind of pristine and Godly, and I started to question all of them. I ended up looking him up on Facebook through my old friend’s Facebook friends list. I found him. His profile said he was engaged to a really pretty girl. I was horrified. I lost a lot of my innocence and naïveté that day.’’
I did not stick around to ask her if her faith was still intact before I left the site. But I hoped for her own sake, she pressed on and did not let that experience steal her relationship with God, that is, if she already had one.
This brought me back to what I have been calling back on deeply for a while now as I see believers give different reasons why they are no longer in the faith. No question, in recent times, we have seen those who are supposed to be representing Christ drop the ball by the minute, doing the exact opposite of what Christ Jesus stands for. And believe me, I have experienced firsthand this kind of people, from senior pastors, ministers, head of departments and even members, in the vineyard (So I do not take lightly what believers go through daily among people who are the so-called shepherd of the flock.) But if I had placed them anywhere close to where I should not have, I could have probably lost my faith a long time ago. So, imagine how much I thank God for Jesus, His Word, which does well to prepare me daily for whatever comes with each day.
It is sad to watch how believers quickly forget the One who saved them and shift attention to people, which brings me to ask. For how long will some folk go on looking at another human as their example to the point where they forget only Jesus Christ deserves to be the only EXAMPLE to look up to and be like? Why should anyone idolize another? How long will some folk blame others for their lack of devoting themselves to Christ and the Word? What else will it require to accept that Jesus is the only perfect One? How long shall we be like babes asking only for milk? How long shall we choose to forget that only JESUS CHRIST is the Author and the Finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God (Heb.12:2) and not that, pastor, prophet, priest, group leader etc. For how long shall we decide to dwell on the limitations of a human instead of studying the Bible and simply chose to live like Christ and not like other Christians? It is so true what Pastor Myles Munroe said, just because you are a Christian does not mean you are a Kingdom citizen: citizen of the Kingdom of God. For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ (Phil. 3:20). It is time we allow Jesus Christ to be all we see and stop distracting our lives with other people who shut Christ out, struggling with various life issues thinking they can help themselves get better by their own efforts. These people who have not come to accept the true meaning of being Christ-followers, people who have not entirely accepted Christ as their Lord and everything regardless of the grand or not so elegant positions they hold in the vineyard.
Jesus Christ never has and will never disappoint you. He will never exploit you. He is the unchanging changer because He alone is constant. He will not mess you up or take away your innocence; instead, He’ll restore and make you whole. Hence, I personally advocate that we hold our gaze on Christ alone. He said, you all are classmates; I am your only example. It’s written clearly in (Matt. 23:8-10) what Jesus said, “Don’t let people do that to you, put you on a pedestal like that. You all have a single Teacher, and you are all classmates. Don’t set people up as experts over your life, letting them tell you what to do. Save that authority for God; let him tell you what to do. No one else should carry the title of ‘Father’; you have only one Father, and he’s in heaven. And don’t let people manoeuvre you into taking charge of them. There is only one Life-Leader for you and them—Christ.
Many people are doing merely activities, precisely like this youth pastor, not because they have submitted totally to the Lord but for other understandings. Eg. Someone higher in rank who did not care to check their relationship and standing with God, but still asked them to feed the flock anyway, not concerned if it is junk or natural food, not sure if the person feeding the flock is remotely fed himself. Or, it is possible, youth pastor at that point in his life gave his all for reals. Over the years, his eyes drifted away from Christ, which altered his relationship with the Lord. Running away, not asking for help, and holding the name youth pastor nut now fully in love with the world and not Christ, and keeping up appearances among the folk as he secretly entertains his demons on a dating site(I guess you can call that the crisis of life.) It could be any of this or something else. This is the reason a believer must only look unto Jesus Christ alone who knew no sin 2Corin. 5:21), did no sin (1Peter 2:22), and in him is no sin (1John 3:5) until he took upon himself my sins and yours on the cross (Romans 3: 21-26, 1 Peter 2: 24)
Reminder: Your pastor, minister, pope, priest, or prophet is not CHRIST JESUS, so please stop putting so much of your life and faith in their hands.
Reading the answer, I realize she was a young 13-year-old, and he was 21, but when she saw this man again, she was 20 and he 28. That is quite a long time in-between. Faith dwindles daily; how much more in years. I am not here using myself as a yardstick; only Jesus and the Bible are the standards. This means Christ alone can tell what happened to that youth pastor. And if that young girl, who is now a young adult female, had herself deep in the Holy Bible, looked more to Christ and less at a man, she would not have been so shocked. Because she would have found out that it is articulated by the Lord, many call my name, I will say, I know you not, workers of iniquity. Matt. 7: 21-23 “Knowing the correct password—saying ‘Master, Master,’ for instance—isn’t going to get you anywhere with me. What is required is serious obedience—doing what my Father wills. I can see it now—at the Final Judgment, thousands strutting up to me and saying, ‘Master, we preached the Message, we bashed the demons, our God-sponsored projects had everyone talking.’ And do you know what I am going to say? ‘You missed the boat. All you did was use me to make yourselves important. You don’t impress me one bit. You’re out of here. The apostle Paul also gave a piece of sound advice, ‘’Continue to work out your salvation, with great fear and trembling.” (Phil 2;12b) These and many more scriptures would have prepared her for the days ahead, including this day she saw him again manifesting all that is against being a Christ-follower. My honest thought.
Please allow only God and His written Word to be enough for you, not human. No human born of woman can do what Christ did for mankind on the cross, so stop falling in love with the idea of your ideal Christian brother and sister. The wise will agree that it is best to be in love with Christ. What else do we want Jesus to do for us that he has not already done? Should not a bride be only in love with her groom and no other? Make your priority straight, believers. Do not give in to human eloquence. Jesus Christ is enough, and His Word is all you need to finish strong. Leave those leading the flock astray to God; if they think they are above God, they have something else coming. Speak up when you see things are not going according to the standard of the Word of God. Take your place as his bride, a bride who only does what her Husband authorizes and endorse. ‘Clean house’ when the need arises. But most importantly, do not place anyone on the pedestal of your life and always remember, whoever it is, he is not CHRIST JESUS and can never be Christ. Keep watch. *Wink.
